چکیده

We derive formulae for the coherent and incoherent tune shift due to the nonlinear resistive-wall wake field for a single beam travelling between two parallel plates. The theoretical predictions are compared with measurements performed on an LHC prototype collimator during the 2004 SPS run. We show that the tune shift derived from the nonlinear wake field yields a better agreement with the measurements than two conventional tune-shift expressions which consider only the linear wake field. In particular, we demonstrate that the nonlinear terms of the resistive-wall wake field become important, if, as in the SPS experiment, the collimator gap is comparable to the rms beam size. In addition, for small gap sizes, the incoherent tune spread induced by the nonlinear wake field increases beam stability via enhanced Landau damping. Geneva, Switzerland February 16, 2006

EUROPEAN ORGANIZATION FOR NUCLEAR RESEARCH European Laboratory for Particle Physics THE ELECTRON CLOUD INSTABILITY OF THE LHC BEAM IN THE CERN SPS

The electron cloud induced by the LHC beam in the SPS occurs mainly in the dipoles and it is responsible for strong transverse instabilities. In the horizontal plane a coupled bunch mode instability develops in a few tens of turns at injection. Tune shift measurements, mode number and phase space analyses have been performed at different energies and provide information about the electron cloud...

Resistive wall impedance and tune shift for a chamber with a finite thickness.

Since the resistive wall impedance for a beam pipe of a nonround cross section depends on the coordinates of a witness particle, the witness particle receives an incoherent tune shift. When the expression for the impedance of an infinitely thick chamber is applied to the calculation of this tune shift, it becomes infinite. We have derived the resistive wall impedance for a chamber with a finite...

EUROPEAN ORGANIZATION FOR NUCLEAR RESEARCH CERN-SL-Note-2000-057 AP Electron-Cloud Energy and Angular Distributions

We discuss simulated energy and angular spectra of electrons lost to the vacuum chamber wall during beam-induced multipacting in SPS and LHC. Our simulations demonstrate that electron energies and impact angles are strongly correlated, and that the angular distribution can be modified by the beam magnetic field. The energy spectrum is found to be remarkably sensitive to changes in the bunch len...

Measurements of coherent tune shift and head-tail growth rates at the SPS

Measurements of the coherent tune shifts with intensity and of head-tail growth rates have been performed with single proton bunches in the SPS, at 26 GeV. From these measurements, the real and imaginary part of the transverse impedance can be estimated. Together with earlier and future measurements, this will be used to experimentally document and follow up the effect of the impedance improvem...
